Winnie Karanja is the Founder and Executive Director of Maydm, an organization that equips girls and students of color with the technical skills and experiences to pursue opportunities in STEM. With her background in education and technology, Winnie is devoted to improving her community through STEM learning. Maydm hosts classes, workshops, and events with the goal of empowering students to follow their dreams. Winnie's new initiative, Pioneer Possibilities, brings learning to families' doorsteps, providing elementary aged students with packaged interactive learning experiences to build a foundation for STEM learning.

Learning Under the Hood: Creating an AR Diesel Engine for Students
Pop the hood on any car or truck and you see the engine. What you can’t see is how the engine works. You can’t look at it while it’s running, you can’t easily teach this in a lecture or by telling students to read their textbooks, and there aren’t many diesel resources available for instructors. Many industries face similar problems – how to teach what the learner can’t see.

In this session, you’ll learn how AR models can solve problems in engineering, industry, and mechanical professions. You’ll experience our FVTC HoloDiesel – the Microsoft Hololens AR Diesel Engine, learn from our dilemmas, and have an opportunity to discuss how the project impacted our Diesel students.

Making Observations: Identifying and observing learning in makerspaces
This workshop brings together two informal sites (a library and museum) working with educators to develop and use tools for assessment and evaluation of learning and/or engagement in makerspaces. The Mongol Matrix Game: Matrix Games for Historical Thinking
Matrix games are powerful tools for learning in multiple contexts. This session will allow participants to try out The Mongol Matrix Game, a simulation of a seminal event in Russian history designed for undergraduates. Student players in the Mongol Matrix Game take on the role of one of five factions contending for supremacy during the 13th century Mongol Invasion of Russia; all action is overseen by a teacher playing the role of Game Master. This Play, Make, Learn session is most useful for undergraduate and graduate educators who teach in disciplines that require reasoned argumentation and quick thinking. The session will begin with a quick orientation to matrix game methodology. Participants will get to play 1-2 rounds of the game to experience the challenges involved. The session will conclude with Q&A between the participants and the presenter.

Tour "What the Moon Saw"
UW researchers are conducting a test run of newly developed motion capture technology to see how it works in a theatrical setting with a live audience.  This is a bit like a staged reading, but for technologies rather than scripts.  The video game displayed here is part of a new play, What the Moon Saw, that will debut during the August Saturday Science.

In this tour, you will get a chance to try this game yourself. The object is to herd the chickens back into their coop. To do so, wave your hands, your feet, or any other parts of your body to coax these birds back into their home. Then come back next month to see the whole play.

Please meet in Fifth Quarter Studio for this tour that will leave promptly at 12:30. You can stay as long or as short as you'd like.

During the next Saturday Science (August 10th at 10:15 and 11:15) young audience members will have the opportunity to participate in What the Moon Saw and provide feedback.  The feedback the young people and their grown-ups provide will be instrumental in developing the next phase of the project.

All tours will leave from the Play Make Learn Registration table five minute before your designated tour time. 

The Makerspace is the student-run, rapid prototyping facility that is part of the Grainger Engineering Design Innovation Lab. This was all made possible through a multi-million dollar commitment from The Grainger Foundation. Our facilities include 12,000 ft^2 of shop and flex space with a wide range of rapid prototyping equipment. We strive to empower students and create a community immersed in emerging technologies and focused on creating innovative products.
We are part of the College of Engineering ecosystem of fabrication facilities, which includes the Makerspace (rapid prototyping), TEAM-Lab (precision machining, fee for service job-shop) and Kohler Visualization Studio (virtual reality, 3D scanning and data visualization). These facilities together are over 25,000 ft^2, run by 10 professional full-time staff members and ~50 student workers and contain millions of dollars of high-tech equipment. Students can build anything here: from micro to macro and from virtual to the physical.

Engaging students with educational games
In this workshop, you will have the opportunity to play our free educational games designed to give students from all backgrounds access to engaging, interactive STEM-focused activities. Developed in a collaboration between research scientists, educational game designers, and teachers, the games we present in this session are both scientifically and pedagogically rigorous. Session participants will play three free games: 1) AtomTouch lets students explore atom behavior and states of matter in an interactive, 3D, touch screen environment. 2) Crystal Cave encourages students to explore how molecules form crystals in patterns through a series of increasingly complex puzzles. 3)  Stranded at the Forever Mine introduces students to scientific and mathematical modeling in an edge of their seat, live or die adventure on a distant planet. We will discuss the ability of these games to meet crucial science standards and how they can be used effectively in the classroom.

Conferring in the Classroom
Conferring is a practice through which a teacher can learn about the student’s thinking on a topic, connect how prior knowledge could be applied in new ways, or challenge the student to engage in a meta-analysis of their own learning performance. (National Research Council, 2000, p 61-63; Calkins et al., 2005). Conferring serves a dual purpose of instructing and assessing students. The lines between assessment and instruction can appear blurred, as the two are closely linked in practice. Conferring is the practice of teachers talking to students about their learning. Halverson et al. (2015) explain that conferring sessions, “serve as opportunities for students to have more independent assistance with their work and get help from teachers at the students’ level. These individual conferences also guide the students and teachers in deciding the pace and path of students’ learning by working on their individual learning plan” (p. 14). The following sections describe conferring through the framework of D. R. Sadler’s (1989) three components that make formative assessment effective for learning: a clear view of goals, information about the state of the learner, and action to close the learning gap (Sadler, 1989; National Research Council, 2001, p. 229).

Digital Tools at the Intersection of History and Civics
Carrie (content), Colin (design), and David (classroom teacher) chat about the challenges in making and using digital tools to teach history. They will address the kinds of questions that may well keep you up at night: What happens when the Constitution isn't ratified? Aren't primary sources hard to read (and super boring)? Who wins when game mechanics conflict with historical narratives? How can digital elements bring the past greater relevancy? Where is the teacher's role?

This session features a behind the scenes look at two free digital resources for teaching civics and American History in classrooms. DBQuest is a digital tool for analyzing primary sources. The modules use carefully curated document sets to model historical thinking and promote student agency as students answer the big questions like “Why did the Nashville sit-ins succeed?” Race to Ratify, iCivics newest video game covers the debate over ratification by placing students in the role of a pamphleteer seeing to influence public opinion in advance of the state convention votes.

Assessments in Library Makerspaces: The audience is everyone!
There are many reasons to use assessments in Library Makerspaces. Makers (i.e., library patrons) need feedback. Librarians need to guide maker learning and improve their own practice. Library stakeholders, such as boards of directors and the general public, all want to know if a makerspace is accomplishing its goals. While there is exciting research that is developing novel assessments for making, it will not have a significant impact unless it is paired with the different assessment needs of makers, librarians, and stakeholders.
This workshop will review who are the audiences for assessments of making, and why they might be supportive of assessment but have significantly different assessment needs. Data collection tools for determining assessment needs will be presented and tested by attendees. There will also be a review of what types of assessments could then meet identified needs and attendees will leave with instructions and tools for applying this in their respective makerspaces.

Collaborative Gamified AR Language Learning
Inspired by Holden and Sykes (2011) place-based Spanish augmented reality (AR) game Mentira, I developed two place-based AR gamified systems for French second language (FL2) learning. Explorez and VdeUVic are collaborative virtual narrative treasure hunts. At different locations on campus, players interact with characters that give them quests including clues or options to further the storyline. These interactions take place in the form of written text or audio and video recordings, encouraging students to develop language skills both written and oral. Students choose their own learning path and advance at their own pace. This design-based research draws on sociocultural theory and the social nature of language learning, emphasizing learner interactions as a principal learning force (see Vygotsky, 1986). Central is the notion of mediation, a process involving social interaction and the use of tools to facilitate higher mental activities and skills (Lantolf & Thorne, 2000).  This research entails a mixed-method case study analysis of 3 cohorts of 100-level FL2 university students play-testing the two ARIS AR mobile systems.
My analysis explores potential benefits and limitations of the learning-tools, focusing on CSCL, specifically, seeking answers to the following questions: What are the students’ perceptions of their learning experience? Which elements do they identify as useful for language acquisition? How do they collaborate in order to complete the tasks? In what ways do the students collaborate to develop a meaning through the learning experience?

Connect, Explore, Engage with Your Community Using Sifter
Participants will PLAY with Siftr, a free social media app created by UW FIELD Day Lab, to connect with, or develop a sense of, place through an authentic inquiry experience.  They will MAKE their own Siftr projects to explore the world outside of the classroom by geo-tagging photos and recording field observations using a mobile device. Attendees will LEARN how teachers, using Siftr, can engage students in meaningful stewardship projects within the local natural and cultural communities.

Exemplar Siftr projects will be shared as inspiration for classroom-based applications of the app. Created by K-12 educators, these Siftrs support learning and increase student engagement across multiple content areas including English Language Arts, Science, Social Studies, Math, and Physical Education. Children’s online safety considerations as well as alternate methods of using Siftr when mobile devices are not available will be shared.

A portion of this workshop will be spent outdoors.

Singular Vision: The Independent Game Developer as Auteur
The auteur theory in filmmaking has existed for decades and describes the director of a film as an author who imprints a strong, uniquely identifiable mark on their work through a variety of means, including story structure, cinematography, music, and character archetypes. The auteur's creative vision is singular and stems from their own mind, as opposed to the homogenized, collective decisions of a group of executives, producers, marketeers, or middle managers. The auteur's creative "stamp"  is consistent, and can be seen and felt across their entire body of work, over time.

Does this notion of auteurism exist in the world of game development? If so, how, and why? As a developer of 17 years who has worked on a wide variety of games in many creative and leadership capacities, I will explore the notion of auteurism and the ways in which it applies to the world of independent game development.

Some of the questions I plan to address in my presentation include: Can auteurs exist in what is a typically collaborative production space? If so, who, and what is their role within their studio? What types of games do independent developers make, and why? What qualities make their games feel unique and identifiable? Do auteurist games succeed both critically and commercially? Why have auteurs in games not risen to prominence in similar ways as their filmmaking counterparts (Kubrick, Hitchcock, The Coens, Tarantino, etc)?

I hope to educate and inspire audience members who are engaged in scholarly critical game studies work, as well as attendees who are actively creating their own video games.

Keynote- How the Tools We Use Shape Participation and Learning
An artist by training, Dr. Peppler is an Associate Professor of Informatics and Education at UC Irvine and engages in research that focuses on the intersection of arts, computational technologies and interest-driven learning. In addition to serving as the Director of the Creativity Labs, Dr. Peppler is the Chief Learning Officer at Collective Shift/LRNG, the former lead of the MacArthur Foundation’s Make-to-Learn initiative, and a member of the 2016 and 2017 National Educational Technology Plan Committee, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education. Peppler was on the original NSF-sponsored Scratch team during the initial design and early study of the Scratch platform. Since this time, she has specialized in studying e-textile design with the LilyPad Arduino. 

Dr. Peppler is the recipient of several recent awards, including Mira Tech Educator of the Year and an NSF Early CAREER recipient, as well as grants from the Spencer Foundation, Moore Foundation, and MacArthur Foundation, among others. Through this support, she has authored over 100 peer-reviewed publications, including the authoring or editing of more than 11 book publications. The most recent volumes include the Makeology series as well as the The SAGE Encyclopedia of Out-of-School Learning. Her current scholarly interests include theorizing how changing the tools and materials in today's learning environments can help broaden participation in STEM, particularly among women and other minoritized populations, as well as improve overall learning outcomes.

Engaging students with educational games
In this workshop, you will have the opportunity to play our free educational games designed to give students from all backgrounds access to engaging, interactive STEM-focused activities. Developed in a collaboration between research scientists, educational game designers, and teachers, the games we present in this session are both scientifically and pedagogically rigorous. Session participants will play three free games: 1) AtomTouch lets students explore atom behavior and states of matter in an interactive, 3D, touch screen environment. 2) Crystal Cave encourages students to explore how molecules form crystals in patterns through a series of increasingly complex puzzles. 3)  Stranded at the Forever Mine introduces students to scientific and mathematical modeling in an edge of their seat, live or die adventure on a distant planet. We will discuss the ability of these games to meet crucial science standards and how they can be used effectively in the classroom.

Learning with Visual Representations in an Educational Video Game
Digital learning games can engage students in authentic STEM practices, including the use of visual representations. Prior research shows that visual representations can help students learn, as long as they have prerequisite representational competencies to understand how they show information and how to use them for problem solving. However, prior research has not addressed these questions within games.
This presentation focuses on two initial studies on the intersection of games-based learning and visual representations. The first study was a case study of a high-performing student playing an astronomy game used as an assignment in an introductory astronomy course. We investigated whether he had the representational competencies necessary to make sense of how astronomers use visuals to solve disciplinary problems. Even though the student showed high performance in the course, he had difficulties making sense of the visual representations in the game. Further, he did not understand that the visuals in the game were realistic astronomy tools.
The second study was an experiment with 45 students playing the same game as part of a cross-disciplinary capstone assignment in a special topics course in chemistry. The study included two conditions – the game with prompts to support representational competencies and the game with no prompts. Surprisingly, results showed no differences across conditions on measures of representational competencies. Further, results showed no differences in learning outcomes for low performing students but showed that the prompts depressed learning for high performing students. The presentation addresses these results and plans for future studies to gain further insights into these phenomena.

Examining How Games Are Designed and Employed for Learning in China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore
In Asia, Chinese-populated countries such as Taiwan, Hong-Kong, Singapore and China are among the most devoted promoters of GBL.  In Taiwan and Hong Kong, board games are employed broadly by teachers in classrooms while researchers develop games, tutorials, workshops, and lesson plans to meet the increasing needs from schools and teachers.Although game has become widely popular in formal and informal learning settings, there is a lack of literature regarding how games are being designed and employed for education in these countries, especially for the promotion of 21st century learning skills such as collaboration and problem-solving, given these countries are reforming their educational systems for 21st century knowledge economy.

This research investigates how games are designed and employed for learning in the four Asian countries governed by Chinese—China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore. In particular, we investigate the concept of GBL conceptualized, what games are designed for, and the constructs that inform game design by researchers.

We analyze 92 GBL papers published by the Global Chinese Conference on Computers in Education (GCCCE) in the past five years with an analytic framework proposed by Jan and Gaydos. The findings suggest that (1) most GBL studies aim at fostering motivation and subjects-based content mastery via drill-and-practice, (2) GBL is mostly driven by technologies rather than pedagogies.

Not a Fad: Why makerspaces make good learning environments
Drawing on scholarly research and data collected as part of The Wisconsin Teacher Studio, this presentation will make a case for investing in making as a way to meet organizational and scholarly learning goals in your institution.
While makerspaces are certainly proliferating in learning environments (both formal and informal), it is clear that they require the investment in terms of time, materials, labor, and professional learning. So, are they worth it?
The answer is yes, they are. In fact, makerspaces are environments where one can meet a variety of learning and organizational goals including, but not limited to: design-based/project-based learning opportunities for students which afford differentiation and personalization, teaching and learning for social justice, multi-modal literacy, to name a few.
To make this case,  this presentation will share data collected from educators in diverse environments (informal and formal) about the benefits of learning through making, for their students, and also for themselves.

The central dogma of life states that genes, written in DNA and transcribed into RNA, code for proteins. Three nucleic acids code for a single amino acid. This three-to-one coding scheme is a fundamental biological concept. In this activity, young students become familiar with the genetic code using arts and crafts. RNA messages are written on slips of paper and nucleotides are represented as colored symbols rather than A, U, C, and G. Amino acids are represented as their single-letter codes in order to spell words as representations of proteins. Although the genetic code is simplified in this activity, the logic is biologically accurate. Three symbols code for one letter. Participants have a choice of writing RNA transcripts with four stamp markers or decoding written transcripts using custom-made alphabet stamps that have codons as labels, matched with the correct letter of the alphabet when you stamp them. In this way, students perform a fun hands-on simulation of protein synthesis.

Extended gamer’s experience into real world: Elementary school students enactive display in math classrooms
Game Transfer Phenomena is a new inquiry line in game research, but it remains mostly at the conceptual level. In this study, we empirically study how primary school students transfer their gaming experience into the construction of math problems. Specifically we found some students draw from their gaming experience to construct mathematic problems. Three themes were identified in describing such transfer: (1) Constructing math problems with game mechanics, (2) using the representational system in game to construct math problems, and (3) internalizing trial-and error strategy via multiple lives.

To Type or Not To Type: Programming Interfaces for Learners
There are enough games which are designed to teach programming that we can begin to examine the range of affordances presented, and how they might affect learning outcomes for different groups of players.  This talk will attempt to do just that, as we look at the way players code in games like Lightbot, CodeMonkey, CodeCombat, Codemancer, Daisy the Dinosaur, Human Resource Machine, and more.  We can talk about what each of these says about the values of the organization that made it, and what each assumes about the ways players will interact with them in the wild.

Fair Play
Participants will have the opportunity to engage with the pilot version of the game, Fair Play – K12. Fair Play – K12 provides players with an experiential understanding of implicit biases experienced by minority students in K-12 settings. The game was developed as a professional development tool for K-12 educators that encourages empathy and perspective-taking as methods of reducing implicit bias among players. Participants will also have the opportunity to provide feedback on Fair Play – K12 during this 50-minute demo.

Lions and Tigers and Bots is a workshop model demonstrating and actively engaging participants in practical solutions for technology integration in the classroom. We will take participants through exemplar lessons to demonstrate how literacy, social studies, and art can have technology integrated on a daily basis. Participants will specifically learn about and explore how to integrate hardware such as Ozobots,Robot Mice, Botley, and Mini Spheros smoothly into their curriculum.  One main benefit to these devices is that they do not require additional technologies to program and have a low cost to high engagement ratio.

Cultivating Emergent Behaviors: a Tiltbrush VR lecture on education, creativity, and technology
Given in Google’s Tiltbrush, this talk will outline the rationale that guides The Immersive Media Lab at UW-Milwaukee. Out front, some basic thoughts on technology and creativity will be shared/explored. Chris Willey, the director of the lab, will show how he builds “structure” around the intrinsic motivations with the researchers in the space, helping to channel their energy into flow states/deliberate practice. We will see dynamic and convergent zones of proximal development, and finally the main outcome of this antidisciplinary environment: emergent creativity.

Well Played: Leveraging Commercial Games to Teach Skills and Concepts in K-12 and Higher Ed
Commercial games offer an incredibly large amount of skills transferrable to the real world, whether it is learning to work and communicate as a group, understanding another person's perspective and identity, or even how to close read a narrative to discover symbols, theme, characterization, and more. In this session, we will explore commercial games such as Gone Home, What Remains of Edith Finch, Way, Keep Talking & Nobody Explodes, Papers, Please, This War of Mine, and more to discuss their merit as experiential learning and value as digital texts to deconstruct. Their implementation in K-12 and Higher Education will also be shared, along with possible ideas for future commercial game implementations.
